Brad kept on thinking about the same line again and again- I want to sell my house. The flash flood did an extensive damage to his property. Heavy downpours from the Gulf of Mexico all day for three consecutive days flooded his entire house. It was 15 -18 inches of rain reported over the Tampa Bay.
Brad understood that the cost of repair will probably exceed the cost of moving. That is one of the main reasons he was stuck on the line of- “I want to sell my house”. According to his calculation, at the very least, the interior finishes of his waterlogged house needed to be taken off and had to be done again. Due to the high water level, he was not even sure of the electrical wiring, gas lines, furnace and septic system to function properly. Similarly, most probably his expensive furniture and appliances are also no good now.
The dangerous combination of water and wind caused the structural components of the house to warp or shift. Brad also found some of the house’s walls tilted. He was not an architect/ engineer, but he could understand that this was a signal of imminent collapse. Perhaps there would be cracks in the foundations too.
Upon further inspection from inside, he found that the roof was sagging due to the trapped water. The situation was so bad that he was expecting few leakages in the roof. The basement was of course flooded. Again Brad was worried about the foundation walls as the soaked soil from outside can push towards inside causing cracks in the foundation walls.
The plywood in the walls was swelled and automatically peeled apart. Brad checked the chimney and found water was dissolved with mortar. His neighbors told him that there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in case the heat comes back on. He noticed that the flood has deposited silt and aquatic organisms in the entire house. The dirt and water combination created short circuits in the electrical system.
The molds were everywhere as the soaked environment contained sewage contaminant which provided substrate. Brad could easily imagine how hard the cleaning act would be to get rid of the molds. One look at his expensive carpets and he decided to throw it away. The mattresses, beddings, curtains sofas and anything upholstered met the same fate. May be with a bit of luck and prayer some of the kitchen appliances could be repaired. Even his clothes were no good. He felt that the entire house was like a breeding ground for insects and other disgusting creatures.
Most of Brad’s neighbors were his close friends. Their houses more or less suffered the same fate. They were, however, not having the same idea as of Brad’s- “I want to sell my house”. They wanted to ascertain the damage first by a professional. They approached Jeffrey Merkley of MPS Home Solutions. Jeffrey inspected their houses and suggested that they should really follow Brad. The team agreed to Jeffrey’s suggestions. Jeffrey bought the houses at a fair price. He also helped them with rental houses in a nearby neighborhood.
